Switzerland In December: A Road Trip To Remember

Other than the snowy landscape, which was the original reason I planned my trip during early December, there is also the advantage of there being less tourists, better deals in the hotels, and the Christmas markets and decorations were already in place.

It’s a bit more expensive than most of the other countries in Europe but I should mention that I had some great food and wine, without forgetting the delicious Swiss chocolate.

My first destination was Montreux and the castle of Chillon on Lake Geneva, I then continued towards the lovely village of Aigle and visited its gorgeous castle that is surrounded by vineyards from all sides.

I am a snowboard enthusiast but during this trip I didn’t plan any day on the slopes. Nevertheless I passed by Zermatt and stayed there for 36 hours. It’s a paradise for both skiing and nature lovers.  The town simply took my breath away with those wooden chalets, good restaurants, and the amazing view over the Matterhorn Mountain (the one we see on the Toblerone chocolate bar)

I’ve driven in lot of countries, and a lot of different places, but there’s nothing like the Swiss roads. The Furka Pass alone is an experience. You pass by lakes, forests, endless tunnels … it’s a treat to the eye.

I have visited Lugano, Saint Moritz, Zurich, Lucerne, Grinderwald … I slept in the dreamy town of Lauterbrunnen, walked in the streets of Bern, hiked till the Oeschine Lake, had some wine near Oberhofen Castle, ate raclette with a view over Lake Brienz in front of Iseltwald Castle, watched the famous red train of Bernina Express passing over the Landwasser Viaduct, ordered the best cheese fondue ever in Interlaken … I simply did it all.

Switzerland is a unique place and has a charm of its own. You can have a plain croissant surrounded by people speaking French, stop for lunch and get served a delicious pizza by a waiter speaking Italian, and end your day with a hot soup trying to learn German from the restaurant’s owner.
