I have that thing for Italy. For me it’s the ultimate country for a vacation no matter what your interests are or what you want from your trip. It has the tastiest food, welcoming people, beautiful nature, authentic villages, great wine, unique architecture, rich history … but the province of South Tyrol is something even more special.
I arrived at Milano Airport, Malpensa, on a Tuesday, end of October. My journey started there, where I picked up my rented car and drove directly towards Lago di Como. I spent my afternoon wandering from one village to another and stayed my night at a small hotel, in a room with a balcony on the lake.
The timing was great with all the different colors of the leaves. Autumn is my favorite season for photography.
This road trip can be referred to as ‘the lakes’ trip,’ they can offer breathtaking views and they are great for photography enthusiasts, especially with the reflections and the splendid sceneries around them. There are so many beautiful lakes, from Lago di Karersee, to Lago di Braies, Lago di Auronzo, Lago di Centro Cadore, Lago di Corlo, Lago di Garda, Lago d’iseo … and many others.
I would start my day with the sunrise, drive all day long, stopping whenever I feel like, sometimes for some pictures, for coffee, to eat, or simply to just sit and enjoy the moment.
I always like to try the region’s specialties, local dishes and products, but I guess I don’t have to tell you about the food and wine.
I went more to the north and entered Switzerland, just to watch the train passing by Brusio Viaduct. I stayed there half a day looking at train after train and never felt I had enough. I was supposed to visit this place during my road trip in Switzerland, the year before, but there were too much snow and the roads were in a very bad condition.
At certain places I couldn’t believe my eyes. The countryside was simply gorgeous.
All this is something not to be forgotten, but the Dolomites are something else. I have traveled to many destinations before and I have seen lot of beautiful places, but this mountain range exceeded my expectations, and this rarely happens. The towns, the landscape, is a real heaven for outdoor activities lovers, hikers and especially photographers, where you can take pictures like postcards.
One thing is for sure, I will come back to the Dolomites one day, and I hope it will be soon.
